We%26#39;d like to take a day away from Orlando to visit the beach. I understand that Cocoa Beach is only about an hour from Disney. And Clearwater or St. Petersburg are about 1/2-2 hours away. Has anyone been to either beach and could recommend the benefits of one over the other for a short daytrip? Two adults and Five children 7-19 years old. Thank you.
Side Trip From Orlando: Cocoa Beach or Clearwater?
I go to both frequently, and there are a few differences.
The Atlantic coast has rougher surf, which means you often see surfers in the water. There are also more ripcurrents to watch out for. You won%26#39;t find many shells on the beach, but the beach is nice and wide.
The Gulf coast has a lot less surf, which could be why you can find dozens of seashells. It%26#39;s easier to swim in also, because of the calmer water and lack of ripcurrents.
Both beaches have a mix of really built up areas, and more residential areas with county parks for access. The county parks will usually have restrooms and picnic tables. Some will have outdoor grills available. It just depends on how far you want to drive and whether you want shells or surfing. I prefer the Gulf coast, because I like looking for shells, but there are plenty on the forum who prefer the Atlantic as well.

My vote always goes to the Gulf beaches - they are so much more refined and genteel.
