no-see-ums in late may?

I am taking my family on a trip to Sanibel the last week in May. I used to go there as a child (30 some years ago!) and am very excited to bring my own kids there now. I have read a lot about all the bugs on the island. Will it be a huge problem in late May? I also read on a post that cactus juice works well to keep the bugs away? Is this true? If so, it would be much preferable to bug spray, with 2 little kids. Are the no-see-ums worse in am or pm? Thanks for any replies!

The no-see-um problems depends a lot on how wet and hot it gets in May. They are worst at dawn and dusk and in any heavy shaded areas. They can%26#39;t fly really high or in brisk breezes, so you%26#39;re always a bit better off on the sand with the Gulf breeze.

I am a biting insect magnet, and manage pretty well by staying indoors after dark unless I%26#39;m well covered and sprayed with repellant and or Skintastic. They bother some folks a lot and others very little. maybe you%26#39;ll get lucky!!!
