Family Vacation for the end of May, First of June

I%26#39;m looking for opinions/advice for our family vacation. We%26#39;re looking at Tybee Island as well as St.Simons, Jekyll, Amelia, as well as few SC beaches for our family vacation. Our kids are 6,6, and 4, so we mostly just stay on the beach. I don%26#39;t want a crazy Myrtle Beach or Daytona scene, but we would enjoy a night out at a small amusement park or something of that nature. I love to fish from shore sometimes even kayak in the mornings before everyone gets up (6-10), so conveinance (5 min walk or drive) to that would be great. We like to pier fish too.

Above all, we want a place on the beach where the kids can boogie board and build sand castles without being exposed to drunken teenagers.

We%26#39;ve been on alot of the NC and SC beaches, but none of these. We%26#39;re looking at going further south this year since we have to take our vacation earlier this year and we hate cold water. Amelia is about as far south as I would go since my wife is pregnant and she%26#39;s really not lookin forward to the drive.

We are open to other places also. All feed back is very much appreciated. Especially for kids activities.

Thanks

I grew up going to MB. I%26#39;ve been to all of them and believe Amelia Island is the most family friendly of them all. Kayaking, fishing and the beach things are all great there. Only thing missing is the amusement park, which I find a real asset. There are lots of other things for the kids to do and if you wear them out enough at the beach during the day, they%26#39;ll be out of it by 9pm and already in bed. Lots of good historical sites in the area for other activities and the JAX zoo is not far away. Lots of family type accomodations, e.g., houses or condos, available. Try it. I believe you%26#39;ll like it.

Thanks for the input tbone. Amelia was originally my first choice, but my wife has been ';encouraging'; me to find a place a little closer to home. She%26#39;s really not looking forward to 9-10 hours on the road while she%26#39;s 7 months pregnant. I%26#39;ve been thinking about making an overnight stop between here and there, coming and going. I could stop in Charlotte for maybe Carowinds and maybe Atlanta for Six Flags. That would get the amusement park type stuff out of the way and we just hang out on the island. Of course that would cost more $, but maybe I could cut back somewhere else. I%26#39;m open to any ideas. . . . . feel free to jump in.

Not sure when you plan this trip, but you might look into Wild Adventures in Valdosta, GA. I%26#39;ve never been there personally, but have heard good reports. Not sure what the winter activities are, but I%26#39;m sure there is a lot of info available online. That would put you about 2+ hours from AI for your last leg. The Okeefenokee Swamp is also near there and is very interesting as well. Good time of year to go there since summer is ungodly hot/humid/buggy. Good luck and let me know if you need more info on AI.

It would take us the same amount of time to get from our house to Valdosta as it would to drive straight to AI. The closest route for us is I-26 to I-95. It%26#39;s a straight shot, but there%26#39;s not much to see along the way without driving off the interstate. Coming down I-77 to I-26 only adds 45 min. to the total. Coming down I-75 through Atlanta adds over 2 hours. We are going in late spring-early summer, so the swamp is out of the question.

I%26#39;m going to let that rest. Have you fished AI from shore or piers? I was wondering if wading is possible or if it has mud that will suck you down like the South Carolina sounds, creeks, and rivers do. I know that the gators and currents can be dangerous too.

I%26#39;m a sailor vs fisherman, but in fact AI is a fishing community. There is everything from offshore (what the locals call deep sea fishing, but with the Gulfstream about 75 mi offshore, that%26#39;s a stretch), to pier and surf fishing to backwater in both boats and kayaks. You won%26#39;t have any trouble walking/fishing the beaches the full length (12+ miles) of the island%26#39;s shores--they%26#39;re gorgeous, uncrowded, and the shark-toothing is some of the best anywhere. No mud on the beaches. If you want to go into the marshes of course you%26#39;ll find that. Overall, very nice for a family vacation. Just have to hit the weather right, as anywhere.
