Red Tide

As you all know from previous posts, we are considering moving to Naples. However, I don%26#39;t know much about this Red Tide phenomenon. Is there a Red tide ';Season';? If not, are there months where it is more likely to occur than others? How really irritating is it to the eyes and respiratory system? I have heard it can cause watery eyes and breathing problems. How far away from the beach do you have to be before you don%26#39;t experience any symptoms? When there is a Red Tide, how many days does it hang around? And, is it true that it is not always red...but can be green, or other colors? Thanks for the information!

Red Tide

We have seen Red Tide at various times we have visited but can only speak for April to October. I think it%26#39;s at its height during the summer months, but no doubt some search engine trawling can give you more info.

Although its visually not very nice and the smell can be unpleasant, we have never been affected by it health-wise. We have found that there are still a great many people who are happy to venture into the water, red tide or not. The odd thing we found on our last visit was that the crab population appears to have flourished so it clearly doesn%26#39;t affect all sea creatures.

If you are prone to asthma or respiratory problems, I%26#39;d try to visit at its height and see whether it affects YOU, otherwise I woundn%26#39;t be too concerned - it%26#39;s never caused us any problems. Yes, it can vary in colour.

BTW, nice horse...looks like English dressage on that pic.

Red Tide

Que..thanks for the info. It makes me feel better. Yes! It IS English Dressage! I am just learning Dressage after years of Hunt Seat, so I am glad that at least it is recognizeable!! ;-)

Here%26#39;s a link to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Research Institute, which monitors red tide throughout Florida and provides weekly bloom counts.

Red Tide is year round with no particular season. No way of knowing when it might pose an immediate problem. While the previous poster may not have encountered a problem that is not the norm. Emergency Room visits increase by 54% among coastal residents in a Red Tide occurence versus non Red Tide events. It kills fish and contaminates shellfish beds. As for going in the water the stench is horrid and most people do not find appealing the thousands of dead fish on the beach that can accompany a Red Tide Bloom. You can find Red Tide occuring up and down the Gulf Coast not just Southwest Florida.
