I was wondering if anyone could help me with fun things to do in fort myers. I%26#39;m coming from Boston and want to go to the beach and i am attending a redsox game. I will be there in March. If you can idea%26#39;s will be great

4 day trip to fort myers things to do

Fun can mean very different things to different people. I am 25, moved here from Maine, and love the Sox. My girlfriend and I like to go out to Ft. Myers Beach, spend some time in the sun and hit some of the beach bars. We like to fish and kayak in Ding Darling on Sanibel. There are also some bars in downtown Fort Myers which are fun. We find the Edison and Ford estates a little boring.

We are traveling with our 4 month old for a week long trip to Ft. Myers Beach, staying on Estero Island. I am worried about the weather...I have checked weather channel and it says it should only be in the 60%26#39;s and low 70%26#39;s...does that seem right? I am wondering how accurate the weather channel website is...hoping someone can help.

    weather

It depends on when you come. The past two days haven%26#39;t gotten out of the 50%26#39;s and there was a frost this morning!!! But by the weekend it is supposed to be in the 80%26#39;s.

Good, casual restaurant on water taxi route

Hi, we%26#39;re going to Ft. Lauderdale for the first time and I%26#39;m looking for some recommendations for good restaurants which are on the water taxi route. Nothing too fancy, just casual. Thanks!!

Good, casual restaurant on water taxi route

I wanted to make you aware that at least at the moment the Water Taxi service is being changed so that it will make fewer stops at higher fares. You can visit their website

    watertaxi.com/FortLauderdale/FLLAdvisories.A鈥?/a>

for their announcement about this. Things may kep changing as they are still negotiating with the government.

Don%26#39;t know how soon your trip is- I was noticing that one of my favorite waterfront spots, Shirttail Charlies is no longer listed as a water taxi stop. A reviewer in december gave it a very positive review, but one in January seemed to indicate problems there so maybe things have changed. I%26#39;ll be going down that way on Wednesday and will try to go by and see and repost later.

Good, casual restaurant on water taxi route

thanks for the info. I did read an earlier post about the water taxi. I just checked out their website for additional info. We%26#39;ll be there this coming weekend - Feb. 17-19. How is the Downtowner %26amp; Max%26#39;s?

Downtowner is a great ';rustic'; spot popular at lunch time with the legal community- I have had great hamburgers and fish sandwiches there. I have not been to the Riverfront Max%26#39;s but if it is like the one out west, it has lunches that I think are all 3.99 or 4.99 ( I forget which) There are a variety of pastas, sandwiches, hamburgers etc all the same price. The one out west has ';Happy Hour '; all day. I have also enjoyed the Metro Cafe at Riverfront, but not sure if it%26#39;s still there. They are more expensive but have good Italian food with many choices.

Glad it%26#39;s going to be warm again this weekend.

You also will surely want to either ride the Water Taxi or take other transportation to Las Olas Blvd. which is full of good restaurants- Johhny V%26#39;s, Rino%26#39;s Tuscan, Le Bonne Crepe, Mangoes, Cafe Europa and the Floridian ( a good breakfast spot popular with locals) are all possibilities there. You also don%26#39;t want to miss getting a treat at Kilwins - candy to die for! In good weather Las Olas is a great street for strolling

    Enjoy!

We like Shirt Tail Charlie, too. I wonder if something happened to the owners or management.

About Maxs....most of the ones in S Fl have the $3.99 lunch. It is per item. I went to the website, and noticed it appears they may have split partners. One set of Maxs Grille included Orlandos units, the other, a Las Vegas Unit. B oth sites had the same logo, but listed different places.

There is a bad review on TA of the Beach Place Maxs Grille...but we had a good lunch and ($7.99) dinner....they push drinks a bit...ok a lot. At MBP, we like the Sloppy Joes Key West Cafe (really a tavern)...it is good....we also go to the Cafe Casablanca one lunch free with one weekdays). (All at the Beach Place stop, if still listed.)

Shooters prices seem to have gone up, too. I haven%26#39;t tried the 15th St Fisheries in a long time....the reviews are mixed. We had dinner a few times in the Riverhouse....I never reviewed it because it was last year...but IMO it was real good....(I%26#39;m too cheap...and I feel its a bit pricey, but not like Houstons*, Mortons* or Ruths Chris*.)

    * non of these of the original taxi route.

Next to Shooters is Charlies Crab, a chain that is supposed to be very good. Also a Opa Taverna (sp?)...a Greek restaurant that seems a bit wild, but must be fun.

    http://www.ftlauderdaleriverhouse.com

    http://www.sloppyjoeslauderdale.com/

    http://www.maxsgrille.net/

I guess that will give you an idea.

I went to LuLu%26#39;s down the strip the last time I was there and the drinks %26amp; food were great and it was a fun place. Any other reviews about it?

In case you decide to try Taverna Opa- it%26#39;s on the Water Taxi route as are Shooters and Charley%26#39;s Crab- it%26#39;s only open at night I believe, but is a wild and crazy experience- with waiters and customers alike dancing on the tables ( that is not a typo.) In my experience the food is iffy at times and we have had the best time ordering lots of their appetizers and wine and making that our meal.

Shooters is not great in the food department, but certainly has a great waterfront ambiance- lots of large yachts are usually docked for lunch and on the weekend. If you stick with basics like hamburgers you%26#39;ll probably be ok with the food. We lunched at Charley%26#39;s Crab not long ago and it was just so so and more expensive than the others, though the atmosphere is more upscale as well.

I don%26#39;t know if it is still operating with all the construction, but there used to be a very casual bar and grill, the Pelican Grill, up above the Marina at Hyatt Pier 66. It%26#39;s extremely casual ( paper plates) but good burgers and fish sandwiches and frosty drinks and a spectacular view of the Intracoastal and Port Everglades. That used to be a Water Taxi stop- I%26#39;m sure your driver could advise you.

We%26#39;ve never had great food at 15th St. Fisheries, although it is always mobbed. There is a more casual and less expensive restaurant downstairs that sometimes has a Lobster special.

Went to Max%26#39;s at Riverfront on Friday evening before ';Wicked';. Service was horrible, but food was okay. We go to the one in Sawgrass alot and food seems to be much better there. I wouldn%26#39;t go unless I was looking for an inexpensive meal.

  • Bed Bugs At Doubletree

Six of us are booked for the Doubletree in February through Expedia. We have read the reviews of bed bugs. Anybody have additional info on this? Or suggestions?

    Bed Bugs At Doubletree

We have reservations in March and I think I%26#39;ll call them a few weeks ahead and see how they respond. There are some more recent reviews since the ones about bedbugs and they%26#39;re all good reviews with no mention of them. Unfortunately if you do some search%26#39;s on Google it appears bedbugs are making a comeback in the U.S. Supposedly if they ride home in your luggage it is a nightmare getting them out of your house.

Thanks for your post - I too wonder if anyone has heard anything specific about the DoubleTree.

    Bed Bugs At Doubletree

We just returned last night from a 4 night stay at the Doubletree. Prior to our arrival we did call about the bed bug issue. They advised that they had in fact had a problem in one room (which they took care of) and that they had gotten a lot of bad press over this. Upon check in we did check out the mattress for the signs of bed bugs. Everything looked fine and in fact we never had a problem during our stay. The Doubletree is a very nice resort and we would not hesitate in staying again.

    hotel near airport

Can anyone suggest a clean hotel close to the Ft L airport prefer with free shuttle service. We are returning from a Caribbean vacation and just want a decent place to stay for the night before heading home to Canada the next morning.

    hotel near airport

Do NOT stay at the Red Carpet Inn - Ft.Lauderdale airport! It would ruin your cruise vacation, trust me on this!

    hotel near airport

There is a La Quinta Inn in Hollywood, just south of the airport, which gets pretty decent reviews on this site ( I%26#39;m local so I haven%26#39;t stayed there.) It is at the south end of the Oakwood Plaza and is walking distance to several pleasant and reasonable restaurants. I belive they have a shuttle. You might want to look at the reviews to make sure I%26#39;m right.

I would avoid the Holiday Inn Air and SeaPort or any other hotels near it as that is a desolate part of town after dark with no where to go for dinner. Some of the motels on Stirling Road is Hollywood would also be convenient, ( Hampton Inn is one) but I would check reviews as some , notably one called Sirling Suites is reputed to be in poor condition. You can check the Hollywood Forum as many motels are south of the Airport in that town.

The Holiday Inn Express Conention Center on 17th St. is also popular and nearby. I know they have a shuttle to the Port and assume they have one to the Airport as well, but would suggest you verify this by reviews or at their web site.

There is also a nice Holiday Inn (a bit pricy) in Hollywood that provides a free shuttle to the airport. Check out their webpage www.ichotelsgroup.com/h/d/hi/1/en/hd/fllas for more information.

FYI-for more information regarding the La Quinta, see www.lq.com/lq/properties/propertyProfile.do鈥?/a>

there%26#39;s some really nice, and not too expensive hotels near the airport. Among them - Hilton Garden Inn, Courtyard by Marriott, Sheraton, Wyndham, Hampton Inn %26amp; Suites. Some are ';fancier'; than others but all are clean and comfortable!

Does anybody have an opinion about the Ramada Inn Airport/Cruiseport?

You will find several reviews ( most not good)at: tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g34227-d472238-鈥?/a>

I anm staying at the La Quinta Inn in Hollywood in a month. I read good reviews everywhere I looked, and i just needed it for one night pre and post cruise. We were booked at the Amerisuites, but that kept receing bad reviews.

Which Hotel is the best bet?

We are traveling to the Florida Keys in a few weeks and want to stay aroud the Islamorada area. We are traveling with a 2 year old and are looking for reasonable hotel that is nice and clean. Here are a few we found-Tropic Vista Motel, Lookout Lodge, %26amp; Edgewater Inn. Does anyone know anything about any of these motels or any other around the $100-$130 price range. Thanks!

Which Hotel is the best bet?

I can tell you that the Islander Resort is very nice - Each room has a screened in porch.

Everything is ground level. They have two swimming pools - one fresh water and one salt water. I think you would really like it . Each room has a kitchen and they offer a continental breakfast in the morning.

  • How far to WDW from west subdivisions

I%26#39;ve looked everywhere trying to find out how long it really takes to get the WDW from Davenport subdivisions. We are considering both Tuscan Ridge and Orange Tree. Any info would be helpful. We are coming in Feb 21 - Mar 1.

    Thanks!

How far to WDW from west subdivisions

    Hi

We own a home on Orange Tree and cannot give you a trues answer. The reason being the road works on the U192 over the I4. Last Easter it was taking 30 min plus.

What I can give you is a short cut. As you go down th US192 at mile marker 5 take a left down Sherbath Road (Large gift shop on left) follow this road to the lights and it brings you to the back of Animal Kingdom, turn right at the lights and just folloow the signs to the attractions.

    Losing the plot!

If you guys cvan help me with this obscure one you really are miracle workers! I read on here somewhere about a place where you could dance with the characters- could it have been called something saloon or something revue?- think it had just been re-furbished- think it was on a disney property- thought it sounded a laugh but can%26#39;t find anything about it anywhere.

Sorry to be so vague but it sounded good and i forgot to write it down at the time.

    Losing the plot!

    Hello babymac,

You could be looking for the Hoop-Dee-Doo Revue at the Fort Wilderness Resort. It%26#39;s a great comedy, musical dinner show. However you don%26#39;t dance with the characters.

    Losing the plot!

For a very brief time, about a year I think, they had a show at Magic Kingdom in Frontierland where the old Diamond Horseshoe Review used to be where the kids got to sorta ';square dance'; with Goofy and other Disney characters. It was called ';Goofy%26#39;s Country Dancin%26#39; Jamboree'; and we only saw it once.

Unfortunately, this show closed at the end of 2004 after only a very brief run.

This could be what you heard about.

I think I read somewhere that if you go to Mickey%26#39;s backyard barbeque - the characters there do line dancing and the kids can join in - they don%26#39;t visit the tables though like they do at other character meals...

From the words ';dancing with the characters,'; I would agree that it%26#39;s the Mickeys Backyard Barbeque. I went a couple of years ago and while I wasn%26#39;t thrilled by it as an adult, the kids did seem to love it and there was a lot of interaction (dancing) with lots of characters. The informal, picnic atmosphere was also more kid-friendly.

Hoop-De-Doo is also at Fort Wilderness, but the Barbeque is clearly more for kids, though they are both fun (and very similar menus).

    Buses to Disney

Does anyone know if there are buses from Davenport FL to Disney. Tried to search the web but was unsuccessful in finding anything on transportation to and from Disney.

    Buses to Disney

As far as I am aware the public transport ends at the west end of 192 and doesn%26#39;t go down toward Davenport If you are looking to rent a home you will ned a car for transport.

    Buses to Disney

Hi we own a home on Orange Tree US 27 and can give you a very simple answer it is no.

There is a Lynx bus that runs from the Puplix on the 192 down.

  • Holiday Inn Navarre Beach???

Does anyone know if it has been torn down or is it going to open again after being damaged by the hurricane.

    Holiday Inn Navarre Beach???

Let me check...I believe that it was scheduled to reopen in October 2005, but I am not sure if reopened or not. I don%26#39;t see it on the website, so the only other options for now in Navarre Beach/Navarre are the Best Western and the Comfort Inn. I have a feeling that rather than fix the hotel (the Holiday Inn) up, they%26#39;re just going to tear it down and rebuilt it. It%26#39;s a shame, as the Holiday Inn was a very nice place to stay at in Navarre Beach. Hopefully there won%26#39;t be so many hurricanes this year.

    MIami Beach weather

    Hi there,

Just wanted to check what the weather is like at the moment? I%26#39;m visiitng next week and am hoping its warm enough to lie out on the beach!

    MIami Beach weather

    CP:

The weather today is glorious! It is sunny clear and bright. We have had a cold front move through last night and there was warning of FROST - which is entirely wild - but by noon it will be mid 60s F. We%26#39;ve come to work in jackets but will go to lunch break in a t-shirt...

The weather in Florida can change this dramatically in a day. If it reached mid 40s last night, it is still forecasted to be in the 80s by the weekend. Weather as severe as a hurricane can pass us by in hours! Next thing you know it%26#39;s beautiful again. This is life in the tropics...

Please try to log onto www.weather.com and follow the search features to check the weather for South Beach prior to your visit - or enter post code 33139 - and you might click the ';10 day forecast'; feature to project the weather going forward.

But remember - it changes dramatically in a day! Bring swimwear and sunscreen - I PROMISE you%26#39;ll get ample use of both!

Let us know if you%26#39;ve got other questions...

  • Feb 19 - Daytona 500 - Transportation - Return Orlando...

I am looking for any information on affordable and appropriate transportation to/from the Daytona 500 on Feb 19th. Rental car is not an option, but bus, taxi or limo service is.

    steve

    Feb 19 - Daytona 500 - Transportation - Return Orlando...

Did you find any transportation yet? I also am looking for transportation to the race.

    Feb 19 - Daytona 500 - Transportation - Return Orlando...

luv4peyt... I was inquiring with the hotel I am staying at..... there are two of us.... I was thinking a car/limo service may also be an option...how many in your party? I did find a bus schedule from Orlando to Daytona, departing at 7pm from Daytona, but not sure if that leaves enough time after the race?

There will most likely be 4...but is a possibility that it could be 6 or just 2. I should find out how many exactly within the next couple days. 6 of us are going to the race...however, some people are still trying to stay closer to the track. We were hoping to leave early on Sunday to enjoy the pre race festivities---well at least I consider 8:30 to 9 am on a Sunday early. I am waiting on quotes from car/limo companies as we speak and have pretty much ruled out the public bus. Too risky for us! Have you received any quotes yet on the cost of private transportation?

    Laura

I had not explored it, in detail, as it is just me and my son and thought it would not be cost effective for the two of us..... but I am pretty certain that with 8-10 (including us that it may be more reasonable). If we could secure something for $600-$1000 it would be about a $100/per (worst case) but they would probably pick us up at our hotels and quick escape out of town after the race. I am waiting for word back from the concierge at the hotel, as I had asked them to make inquiries on our behalf.... you can email me at born4funagain@hotmail.com

    steve

I did get this from the concierge, at the hotel, on Jan 10th, but have not heard from him since. I have sent a follow up email tonight.

I will be helping you arrange your transportation to The Daytona 500. In order to help you I will need to know the amount of people you will be going with or if it is just yourself. I have already contacted Mears transportation (407-423-5566) and spoke to a representitive. I was told that we could book a exclusive charter thru there special accounts. This charter would be for 10-12 hours. I went a head and checked with one of our limo companies that we work with. The trasportation was going to be chartered for 12 hours with a $72.00 an hour charge plus 20%. As far as transport transportation I am still looking into a company that will do that for you

I found out that there will only be 3 of us needing transportation as the other people have decided to stay closer to the track. The price of a limo seems a bit higher than we were looking to spend. Please post if you find something more reasonable as we would not be averse to sharing transportation costs :-)

There%26#39;s a possibility of providing rides to pay for the rental from Orlando to Daytona for the race... although we won%26#39;t be rushing out after the race. If interested, I%26#39;ll see if it%26#39;s possible... email syzygyus AT yahoo.com

    Steve,

My son and I will be traveling from Orlando to Daytona for the race. Were you ever able to find transportation?

The only thing I found was DOTS http://www.dots-daytonabeach.com/ for $55+ each round trip (I think). I%26#39;m sure there may be others, but I%26#39;m not from the area. We ended up renting a small car for the weekend.

Young adults in May, FT Lauderdale a good choice?

Hey we%26#39;re two girls two guys (not couple) plannin a trip to Orlando one week, and looking for another week somewhere else. We are looking for a decent hotel with pool/beachfront, and somewhere near by a decent nightlife for the weekend. We%26#39;ve been looking at Miami Beach (South Beach) but the prices are more than usual for a decent hotel (i guess since thats where its happening).

Is Ft Lauderdale a good place for us to go? Or Daytona? Were planning the two middle weeks in May, we%26#39;re looking for nice beach/weekend/nightlife.

    Thanks,

    Dennis

Young adults in May, FT Lauderdale a good choice?

I think Ft Laud will be fine if you can find accom in your price range. It is not as %26#39;happening%26#39; as South Beach, but has plenty to offer.

The beach area has a bunch of bars and restaurants, although the area is a little tacky.

Las Olas runs from the beach into downtown, and tiwards the downtown area on Las Olas there are loads of bars, restaurants, galleries, boutique shops etc. Really nice area, which can be accessed by Water Taxi from the beach area.

A little further down the road is the Riverfront and Himmarshee Village, which is where most of the late night action takes place. Again bars and restaurants, but also a bunch of night clubs.

If you get bored of this area or wnat a variety, you can tkae a taxi to the Hard Rock casino and resort, whcih also has a bunch of of bars, restaurants, and clubs.

    anyone know?

Does anyone know what a Disney imagineer is? I have seen other posts mention dining with a Disney imagineer and have no clue what its all about, is it some sort of character meal?

sorry if its obvious and I just havent picked up on it!

    anyone know?

Understand a Disney Imagineer is an employee or freelance worker working for Disney usually in animation and/or computer graphics dept mainly involved with the creation and development of new carachters.

Do they still offer the dining package?

    anyone know?

    littlepc,

    Yes, they do.

Disney Imagineers are the people responsible for anything new that comes to the parks. They create the rides from concept to reality, figuring out how to make the impossible possible. It%26#39;s a fascinating job.

I %26#39;ll do it part time.

I%26#39;ve got loads of great ideas like that one about combining The Munchback of Notre Dame, Phantom of the Opera and the Beauty and the Beach.

An untapped mine of ideas just waiting to be called an imagineer - that%26#39;s me. I think I will pop into Disney on Saturday and offer my services.

They might offer me Paris as an apprenticeship but that is probably beyond me!!!

I%26#39;ve dined with both an Artist and an Imagineer. It%26#39;s a limited seating, private dining experience at the Brown Derby in MGM. The experience is different every time because you never know who you will be dining with or what their background is. The Imagineer I dined with had been working on the development of Saratoga Springs, but had been with Disney long enough to have worked on several other projects. They may or may not know (or admit they know) the answers to all of your questions, but it%26#39;s an interesting experience. All guests receive some sort of gift at the end of the meal. We received a very unique (cool) plate with inscription, date and logo.

Also, they now have a Dining with WDW Animal Programs once a week at Jiko. Also a good experience.

Mom %26amp; Pop Motel on PCB

You could try Beachbreak or Palmetto, but are family run hotels right on the beach. Nice, clean and affordable. Hope this helps....

Mom %26amp; Pop Motel on PCB

Is a $100 a night per room out of your budget? If not you might try Casa Blanca Resort. It is a condo but a smaller one and in a great location. It%26#39;s right next to Holiday Inn Sunspree. It%26#39;s not a fancy place but it is clean and has a good pool and usually a great group of folks staying there. It%26#39;s a timeshare unit so the same people go back almost every year. There are restrictions on the rooms (only a5 per room) and availability can be limited but you can check it out and see if it works for you. At least you%26#39;d have a kitchen to save on money for breakfast and lunch.

Bikini Beach is a nice hotel. I haven%26#39;t stayed there in a LONG time so don%26#39;t know what their rates are but you can check them out. They%26#39;ve been around for a while but still a nice place.

Also check out Polynesian Village. It%26#39;s on the West End of the beach and away from the crowds and noise. Again, not sure what their rates are but it%26#39;d be worth considering.

I%26#39;m sure there are others but can%26#39;t think of any. Now that all the high rise condos have come in, there just aren%26#39;t many small hotels any more.

    Good luck.

The Osprey and Driftwood Lodge are very family oriented. Flamingo might be worth a look at.

Universal Studios/Island of Adventure vs. WDW Parks

I know. I know (look back in threads), but my ? is a little different.

Hey everyone out there. I have been to WDW on multiple occasions, but again this is the 1st year 4 generations are going (me who is 24, my tiny 6 year old daughter, my 56 yr old mom, and 75 yr old grandmother). Last year when I was in Orlando, I really wanted to go to US/IOA with my daughter b/c it looked like it would have been fun. Well, I purchased my tickets and exchanged them the next day. I looked at the map and there didn%26#39;t see like there would be much for a 6 yr old to do. And also getting the locals opinions on whether my daughter would be able to ride many of the attractions. They were very doubtful that she would, so I cut that out of the plan.

Well now every channel that I turn to their is always some Florida commerical on, wheteher it be SeaWorld, Univesal/IOA, or even Disney. So when we go in 5 months, again my plan is just WDW and SW no US/IOA. From the looks of the commericals I would think that my family might enjoy some things at those two parks (US/IOA), but would that be a little overwhelming for their ages and just stick with the Disney Parks?

It just gets to me with the height thing. My daughter is a Jr. Evil Kenival (some people mistake her for 3 %26amp; 1/2). But I guess she get%26#39;s her height issue from her mother%26#39;s side especially (mom is 5%26#39;3';, grandmother is 5%26#39;0'; even, her great-grandmother is 4%26#39;11'; and her dad 5%26#39;10';), So I guess I will also have to look forward to the height being an issue for just a couple of more years.

Universal Studios/Island of Adventure vs. WDW Parks

If your six-year-old daughter is small for her age, and the older ones of the group are not in excellent health, I personally don%26#39;t think there%26#39;s enough at Universal/IOA to warrent the cost.

There are very few rides/attractions at Universal/IOA that would cater to all of you. Your daughter is probably too small for most things there, except in the Dr. Suess areas. The older ones you%26#39;re taking may not be able to handle the rougher stuff, which is what these two parks have for the most part.

With the group you have, I%26#39;d stick to Disney and Seaworld. If it were just you, I%26#39;d say go to Universal/IOA and have a ball, but I think you%26#39;ll be way too limited with your companions.

    Just one gals opinion.

Universal Studios/Island of Adventure vs. WDW Parks

Yes, I agree that IOA might be a little much for your group, but Universal Studios might be fun. However, if you can fit it in your schedule without over doing it, it fit%26#39;s in your budget and if you%26#39;re not going to be there during a busy time of the year which might make you crazy, I%26#39;d say go for it.

We%26#39;ve been to US/IOA twice now. The first time my son was only 2, but he loves super heroes. We couldn%26#39;t go on much, but we had a nice time. IOA has Dr. Seuss Land and at Universal Studios they have a great kids area. It%26#39;s also fun to see SpongeBob, Scooby Do and a bunch of other characters there. For tickets be sure to check out the Universal Orlando web site. They sometimes run some really good specials depending on if you%26#39;re doing both parks and multiple days.

I agree with the others that IOA is probably you should wait a few years to experience. Universal Studios would be fine I think.

    Beach stay in Florida

Does anyone Know of a beach in Florida that still not to expensive?I want to bring my whole family to florida (3 Families) for Vacation in June (I%26#39;m Paying for all room) so I%26#39;ll need 3 Motel rooms. Most of the larger beaches are just so expensive I can%26#39;t afford them. Thanks for your help.

    Beach stay in Florida

The west coast of florida is still reasonable, check Clearwater Beach, Indian Rocks Beach/Indian Shores, Reddington shores/beach, madiera beach, treasure island, and st pete beach, all listed on www.floridasbeach.com.

    Beach stay in Florida

I agree with Tampan, the Tampa-area beach towns are very reasonable. Also, condos in this area are abundant and can make for a less expensive vacation than staying in a hotel. June is ';off season,'; so prices will be less than now. Can all three families stay in one 3-BR condo? How about a 1-BR and another 2-BR unit? Most have fold-out couches for kids. You%26#39;ll save a lot on meals with a fully equipped kitchen. Also, you don%26#39;t get nickel and dimed by ';resort fees.'; It%26#39;s also nice to have a large unit in which to spread out. Some of them even have washers and dryers. Plus, this area%26#39;s beaches are very nice.

... almost forgot--look at www.trsinc.com and www.vrbo.com for condo rentals.

Check out New Smyrna Beach on the east coast just south of Daytona. A great family beach and town. Stay at a condo and you can get a really good deal--much more space than a motel room, plus a full kitchen so you can eat in if you want--especially nice for the kids..just run up to your condo from the beach or pool to grab a quick lunch or snack. It%26#39;s a great location to explore other areas, too, if you get bored with the beach. Daytona USA if you happen to be a race fan is lots of fun for everyone in the family--lot of history, interactive games, tour of the speedway, etc. Also just 40 minutes from Kennedy Space Center, which is a must-see. Checkout website: nsbfla.com or especially daytonalodging.com which lists Superior Small Lodging facilities which guarantee cleanliness, friendliness, service, etc. Enjoy your visit wherever you go!

where to stay in st. petersberg

Hi, I went on trip advisor yesterday to find hotels in myrtle beach. The week we picked is actually bike week, way to busy,so now we think maybe florida is better. We are driving down so we did not want to go as far as Lauderdale. I thought st.petes would be ok as far as distance goes. If anyone can help as far as suggesting a 5 star hotel,i am real picky, that would really help us out.

Check the Don Cesar resort and Spa, beautiful resort(4 star), and beaches.

No more cold: My wife and I wish to relocate to a warmer climate and St Pete looks real Nice. I myself have been to floridas east coast. Not to impressed.

I do construction and the missy, she%26#39;s a office lady. It doesnt look as though we should have any problems finding work, if not in St. Pete theres still Tampa

any oppinions or advice for us would be appreciated greatly

    Thank You all!

Try CareerSeeker - it is tied in with the Tampa Tribune Classified. Also CareerBuilder is good, better than Monster I think, for this area.

Anywhere hurricanes strike are good areas for construction folks. :)

If you have any specific questions, feel free to ask. If I can%26#39;t answer them, someone will.

  • 2 weeks in Florida - What to see and do???

    Hi all,

We are planning a two week vacation to Florida in January/Feb 2007.

We enjoy the beach, shopping, seeing the sights etc.

Where would you recommend to stay for a nice beach? How about shopping? What fun things do you suggest to see and do?

    Thanks,

    Tanner

2 weeks in Florida - What to see and do???

    Hi Tanner.

You%26#39;ll have to be a bit more specific I%26#39;m afraid. Do you want to do any of the big theme parks - Disney, Busch Gardens, Universal etc? These can take over 14 days by themselves. Jan/Feb may not be hot enough for beach based holidays.

    condo rental

We will be in Madeira Beach the week of July 14-23. We are looking for a beach front condo that will rent for those days. We understand most condos only rent Sat. to Sat. Does anyone know of a condo that would rent for those days? Possibly one that would accept a 12lb dog.

    condo rental

Check our www.trsinc.com or www.ourcondo.com and www.floridagulfvacation.com for multiple properties along this beach. Some rent daily (although rare) but they also list homes in the area on the beach where a dog would also be permitted.

Try the SANDY shores condos. They accept pets

and will rent various time frames

    discovery cove

I%26#39;m reading the Discovery Cove Website and it appears that at least one person in your party has to do the dolphin encounter is this correct? This also means that person%26#39;s admission fee is going to be approximately $278? We are primarily interested in the snorkeling. Is the snorkeling good enough that it%26#39;s worth the cost?

    discovery cove

    Hello BFM,

No, I don%26#39;t believe one person has to do the dolphin swim, all of you can snorkel the whole day if you wish. I believe that would cost approximately $149.00 per person. Yes, we loved a day of snorkeling at Discovery Cove and do feel it is well worth it. Just a note about doing the dolphin swim. It does include free tickets to Sea World so if your planning on going there anyway it may be worth it to book the 30 minute dolphin swim also.

    discovery cove

This is only a requirement if you book online. Give them a call...you can book with no dolphin encounter that way.

I think it is worth it to go only for the snorkel. You can still observe the dolphins very closeby without getting into the water with them. I am not sure, but I thought Sea World tickets were complimentary no matter which package you book.

I agree that the Dolphin Swim requirement only is for internet bookings.

    Hi Everyone,

I was wondering if you could help me with a problem I have. We are travelling to Orlando in April (yep, gonna be busy) and I would love to book tickets to Discovery Cove but I remember reading somewhere that the park is closed from the 1st till around the 23rd of April. I have been on-line and nothing is mentioned there. In answer to your question Boundformaui we had an amazing day there. We hadn%26#39;t ever been snorkeling before and we really enjoyed it. The weather wasn%26#39;t brilliant and when leaving they asked if we had enjoyed ourselves, we said yes but it was too cold to stay. To our astonishment they offered to have us back another day without charge. (without the dolphin swim and we would have to pay for our lunch too which was understandable.) Hope you book up as I would love to. Hope this helps

    BJ

I just made reservations for 4 at Discovery Cove for April 12. They had availablity that whole week, so I don%26#39;t think they are closed. (At least not that week anyway!)

Thanks! Just remembered where I saw the posting that they weren%26#39;t open. It was a company called ';keith prowse'; where alot of British people buy tickets for theme parks etc around the world. Will go and have another look..

    www.keithprowsetickets.com

just looked again, very confused maybe not offering tickets through that vendor? will try emailing Discovery themselves.

    thanks

    BJ

    EFSnow

Couldn%26#39;t find a way to get through to DC via email so just rang them. Spoke to someone called Anthony, they are open on those dates but not for dolphin swims which is fine as it will be cheaper. cheers

    Stargazer cruise

Can anybody comment on the Stargazer cruise with Joe Universe? Is it worth the price and what happens if it%26#39;s cloudy and you can%26#39;t see any stars?

    Stargazer cruise

We did it on a cloudy night last April, and loved it. He is both entertaining and knowledgable. That we couldn%26#39;t see as many stars as on a clear night wasn%26#39;t an issue. We could see some of the brighter things, and saw, for the first time, Jupiter%26#39;s moons. The binoculars they hand out are adequate, but I was very glad I had my own, which made it that much better.

There are no beverages nor snacks, unlike some of the sunset cruises.

Visits to other resorts inside Disney???

    Hello!!

I am going to stay at Port Orleans-French Quarter, I would like to know:

    1. If I am allowed to visit the lobbies and/or surroundings of the other resorts inside Disney??

    2. May I swim in the swimming pools of the other resorts inside Disney or only in the swimming pool of the hotel that I am going to stay??

    Thanks for your advice.

    Garcita

Visits to other resorts inside Disney???

You can visit the other resorts all you want, but I think you have to stay in your own resort%26#39;s pools.

Visits to other resorts inside Disney???

Thanks Kats for your advice. I am excited about being in WDW by late April!!!

I will let you know once I return from the trip about my experience there.

    Garcita

    Hello Garcita,

Yes as Kat said you may visit other resorts however Disney does not allow use of other pools other than the one your staying at.

But how would they ever Know?

One of our experts will know for sure how they tell, but seems like it was a wrist band or something similar that identifies you are a guest of that resort. If you don%26#39;t have that resort%26#39;s ';identification'; tag, band, or whatever they use, then you can%26#39;t be in their pool.

Kat-Cubs-Fan. I鈥檝e stayed on site. There are no wrist bands are anything like that. Ya they could ask to see your room key but I think that鈥檚 very unlikely.

I鈥檝e never used another resorts pool whilst staying on site, but some people I know do. In fact they make a day of it and really enjoy it.

Who am I to judge but I don鈥檛 think I could do it. But whilst im sat by my relatively small pool they are living it up at the yacht club. Makes you think鈥︹€?

    Vinny

Vinny, I knew I%26#39;d read something about wrist bands at the pools, so I went back and found the post in a search.

One of the Orlando Experts, FLA4FUN, wrote the following in a post made recently:

    ';Pool Update: I was at the Beach Club Villas, which has access to the extremely popular Stormalong Bay pool complex. They have taken down the gates that you used to access with your room key, and gone completely to the wristband. That makes it much more convenient to step outside the pool area for a bite to eat, and then go back in. I haven%26#39;t heard if this will be the norm at all the resort pools, but it%26#39;s not a bad idea, and makes it a lot easier to enforce. I didn%26#39;t notice any wristbands at the quiet pools, but I wasn%26#39;t close to them often, and when I was, didn%26#39;t see anyone in them.';

So, some pools use room key entry to the pool area and some have used wristbands. Some probably don%26#39;t use anything at all.

I can specifically remember that someone said that the Yacht and Beach club give out wristbands at the pool.

Just as the previous posters said, you are welcome to visit all the resorts and eat at the restaurants and use thier services but it is considered more of a general respect for you not to use the pool at another resort since the guests at that resort are paying to have access to that pool as part of thier resort amenities and there are also crowd-control and security reasons.

As far as I know, I dont think there is anyway for the resort staff to specifically know whether or not you are a guest of that resort using the pool, but im sure that if you are seen leaving the resort in wet swimming suits and pool gear you will raise a little suspicion. I know that the Yacht %26amp; Beach club has certain pool entrances blocked off that are directly on the main footpath to keep visitors from walking directly into the pool area.

    Either way. Have Fun!

As DVC members we are allowed to go to other pools. The exceptions are Stormalong at the Beach club and the pool at the Animal Kingdom Lodge, because they are so popular. They do use wrist bands. At other resort pools no one seems to care. We use our key from OKW to charge at the bar or for lunch etc. I will say during peak periods we lose the ability at any resort also.

  • Family Suites/ Condos for short stay

Hi all. Am planning a 2 week family trip to Orlando in the summer but we would like to take 2 days out to spend in Clearwater or St Petes area. Ideally, I would like us all to stay in 1 hotel room/suite or condo but we have 5 kids (aged 12-16). Does anyone know of any hotels/motels that do suites for this number of occupants or condos with 3 bedrooms that will let out in summer for only 2 nights? many thanks

Family Suites/ Condos for short stay

We are headed to that area this April. We found a condo for only 4 nights with a family of 6 through Travel Resort Services. Their web site is trsinc.com. Their phone number is 1-800-875-5513. They can find you places that are available for less than a week and are very helpful. Good luck!

Family Suites/ Condos for short stay

Marriott Suites have suite style rooms that would accommodate you. I believe they have rooms with 2 Queen or double beds and also sofa bed so the teens could all sleep in one room and give you peace in the other.

You may find it cheap to add on to your flight/holiday already booked. You may want to consider flying out to Tampa as it can work out cheaper sometimes and start your trip with Clearwater St Petes and then fly back from Orlando.

where to stay in destin/fort walton?

Can anyone give me some info on Edgewater Beach condos in Destin, have not seen much advertising for them, any info would be great.

where to stay in destin/fort walton?

I believe there is a lot on construction next door.

where to stay in destin/fort walton?

    Lot%26#39;s of constuction is right.

Construction indeed but if all you want to do is hang out at the beach then who cares! Plus you won%26#39;t have to travel far because shopping centers and restaurants are within walking distance (Buster%26#39;s.....mmmmmmm). Good burgers and booze!

Holiday inn on the beach??? Looking for nice hotel on the...

We are coming to Destin in June and are looking for a nice hotel on the beach. I have reservations at the Holiday inn on the beach. We are traveling with two small children. Any suggestions? Would like a nice hotel directly on the beach with a pool and it would be nice if it have a pool side bar and eatery.

Holiday inn on the beach??? Looking for nice hotel on the...

Most accomodations in Destin are condos. You may be happier with a condo on a less crowded beach.

Holiday inn on the beach??? Looking for nice hotel on the...

Gotta agree with previous post. I stay next to the Holiday Inn and the Inn is a zoo at times, though they do have bar, restaurant and kiddie pool. Beware that HI charges a pretty penny for those conveniences.

My suggestion is to try a condo; they give you more breathing room and privacy. Plus you can often get a unit with the washer/dryer within, a big help with youngsters. Who wants to spend their vacation hanging out at the laundromat? Eatery%26#39;s and bars abound! Here are some places to help with your search:

Destin Gulfgate (about 1/2 mile to the east) is very nice and we have stayed there also. Silver shells is also nice. They have lots of units.

No bar needed when you stay in a condo. Full kitchen usually means a big fridge for all your beer and a blender for all the margaritas you can handle. Just be sure to bring a big enough thermos to fit the tequilla and lime goodness!

PLAY18 - weather good enough in STL to play 18 yet?

I have to agree with the previous posters that a condo may be a better option. We stayed at Pelican Beach Resort and really liked it. Great location close to restaurants, shopping, directly on the beach, full kitchen, nice pool w/ kiddie pool, pool bar and deli.

For less that a regular hotel room at the HI, you can get a 1 bedroom condo with a Gulf view, kitchen, and a lot more space.

Baked - the weather has been on and off here. I%26#39;ve gotten out five times since Christmas, I guess that is all I can ask for.

Today is nice out and would be a great day to play, but I forgot my damn sticks at home. I guess since the weather is turning I should have them in my car at all times...

I speak a little English. I am worry that no one there could understand us when the time comes for me to ask for something.

    Spanish language in WDW???

I dont know that the answer to your question would be yes. But I would think it would be a good bet that there will be a good lot bi -lingual. When you go to shops supremarkets Resteraunts etc lots of these places are, and i would think the parks all have a good cross section of people.

  • World Showcase Passports?

I read somewhere that kids could get a ';passport'; for visiting the different lands in the world showcase. Is this something that we would purchase or is this something that we have to ask the right person for? Thanks.

    World Showcase Passports?

You%26#39;ll have to purchase it. We bought ours in Canada, but I%26#39;m assuming that they have them in every country. It really was a great idea for the 11 year old in our group. He would%26#39;ve been bored out of his mind in the world showcase but instead he made a game of who could find the next kidcot center first.

    World Showcase Passports?

They are available at just about every retail location in the park. Sometimes they are up by the register, and sometimes they%26#39;re on the shelves with other merchandise.

My daughter loved getting her passport stamped in every country and they also wrote a greeting in the language of the country you were in. It does take at least half a day to go round all the countries and do the activity and get your passport stamped so be sure to leave yourselves plenty of time.

It is also a lovely thing to look through when you get back from holiday and even years later.

    Shawna

The passport is a lot of fun and can be purchased at all shops in World Showcase.

Once all pages stamped/signed you can take it to any country and get free gift.

The kids love it andit keeps them from getting too bored. As far as I know they also still do the kiddie activity stops at various lands where they can make their own mask which is a great souvenier. We have several which are displayed at home. Have also been to ';SHOW AND TELL'; at school.

    Transport

We%26#39;re arriving in Orlando by Amtrack. Will we be able to get a taxi outside or should we try to book a limo beforehand.

    Transport

What time are you getting in? The cabs know when trains are arriving and there are a few outside most of the time but sometime there are too few cabs for the people wanting one, it may be best to book something ahead of time.

Colchester UK to Orlando FL by Amtrack, thats some trick.

    Transport

Thanks for that. I%26#39;ll make enquiries. We%26#39;re actually spending a few days in New York and travelling down from there. The kids (including the adult kids) are really excited by such a long train journey.

    reynards

Sounds great. Spill the beans as to cost and length of journey........

Tprpsp; We are good at digging tunnels for trains to run in. And we have 4 tunnelling machines which dug the Chunnel reduntant, May be we should set them on digging west, and create another Palm island in the English channel with the excavated material.

Littlefpc; Lots of the american ';Snow Geese'; travel to Florida for the winter that way, And train their car and camper vans and take everything with them including the kitchen sink. Just like our Eurostar ferry service. Dont think its that expensive.

    Best Fast Food

Been to Orlando twice before and both times have tended to eat out in nice restaurants.

This time however we are on a budget, so will probably be eating more fast food than Nouvelle Cuisine (although I%26#39;m sure we%26#39;ll still manage a visit to Bahama Breeze and cafe tutu tango).

Anyway from my previous 2 visits the only fast food joint I really enjoyed was Checkers. Could anyone confirm if it is still there? Also, what other fast food places would you reccomend?

    thanks

    Dean

    Best Fast Food

As much as I hate to endorse fast food in general (although it is sooo good sometimes), I would say that the McDonalds near the corner of Sand Lake Road and International Drive is quite good. It%26#39;s one of those gourmet McDonalds (Bisto or something?) and they%26#39;ve got paninis and all different kinds of breads and meats. The prices are a couple of dollars higher than the usual McD%26#39;s fares, but last time I was there it was really good.

Also, Quiznos has some good-tasting subs (maybe too spicy for kids...spicy as in spices in their different sauces on the subs); and while I%26#39;m on the sub thing, I%26#39;ve never been to a Firehouse Subs I didn%26#39;t absolutely enjoy. I was a Subway man until my co-worker kept going on and on about how much better Firehouse was. I tried it and it was excellent. I still go to Subway, but not when I have the choice between the two.

    Hope that helps!

    Best Fast Food

With so many Buffets in kissimme why choose a fast food resturant. Western Sizzlin is fantastic especially for the price. 5 for brakfast, 9-10 for lunch and dinner. More if you side order a steak.

Deano we travel with kids and fast food tends to be our preferred choice.

Checkers is still around at various places and we all like wendys which always seems to be very fresh.

One other we really like is the ponderosa steak restaurant (2 on i drive and 3 on the 192) costs for lunch / dinner $8.99 for a steak/chicken/fish dinner with full buffet included and deserts. You can eat loads if you wish. We have never had a bad time there.

Cici%26#39;s on i drive do an all you can eat buffet all day long for just $3.99 including pizza, pasta, sald and desert. Was ok when we tried but not fantastic, however we tried another cici%26#39;s in sanford and it was really good so it may well just depend on the day you go.

    Have a good holiday.

    Janice

If you go west on Sand Lake Rd. from the aforementioned McDonalds, there is another McDonalds which was built later and also has Panini%26#39;s and Bistro Gourmet selections, as well as regular menu items, and is two stories with kids entertainment. But what is even better is off of the second level, you have a view of Little Sand Lake, as well as Spring Lake. At Downtown Disney, Earl of Sandwich is good.

If you hit 441 (Orange Blossom Trail) just north of the Florida Mall, you have Backyard Burgers, which serves a good burger, and also Beto%26#39;s, which is Mexican fast food, but more authentic than any Tex-Mex place, and still reasonably priced (the salsa is hot, though!). And, in general, I like Chick-Fil-A, Popeyes chicken strips, and Pollo Tropical (latin/carribean accented, maybe the best fast food chicken, period).

There are no good fast food places.

There is a Checkers fast food right in front of, or right next to, Old Town on Hwy 192 in Kissimmee. Just ate there this past trip in November. Great burgers and shakes!!

If you like Italian, there is a Fazolis on Hwy 192 as well, although it is down past the Walmart and all the road construction on the east side. They have ';fast food'; Italian selections that are really good, but not too expensive.

If you%26#39;ve never experienced a Krystal burger, you should. They are small, square burgers that come with only mustard, pickle, and onions.....lots of onions. We in the South call them ';gut bombs';, but they sure are good!! There is a Krystal on Hwy 192 in Kissimmee as well, although there may be other locations too.

Just some additional ideas for you.

I like Panda Express in the malls. The burbon chicken is great. Better that the others that claim to make burbon chicken.

Best tip ...try to eat big at lunch time.Can%26#39;beat Olive garden lunch served until 3.30 p.m.Excellent unlimited soup salad and bread sticks for under $5 and soup and assorted entrees all under 10.Red Lobster also do lunch specials as does Steak and Ale.No need to eat in the old fast food familiars that we have at home American mid range chains are so affordable.

Publix groceries have very nice dillies in them. You can get great fresh subs there. You can also get cooked chickens and such there. If you have a kitchenette you can save even more money if you buy your meals there. No saying do that every night but buy stuff us usually don鈥檛 get back home. I don鈥檛 get Snow Crab Legs here so I go to Publix, buy 2 lbs and boil them in my place. I also pick up a pack of Land鈥檕鈥橪akes garlic butter and a fresh salad pack with dressing. After a long day I kick back with my quick meal, watch a movie and I鈥檓 in heaven. Better and cheaper than red lobster.

Sorry that sould be deli鈥檚 not dillies..lol

We will be staying at The Atlantic next Sunday and Monday nights. Any suggestions for good restaurants? Coming from NYC,looking for some nice local restaurants and hopefully some warm weather. Big Blizzard yesterday!

    Local restaurants

Hope you%26#39;re not tired of shoveling :))) !!

Here are some restaurants that are or were on the water taxi route....

    tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g34227-i98-k459293鈥?/a>

But those are only on that route. There are several we like...will you have a car? If so, there are some expensive chains, like Mortons %26amp; Ruths Chris, but some more local we like are

In Ft Lauderdale, Primavera on Oakland Park Blvd. Many don%26#39;t like it, but the one time we went was excellent; Marks Las Olas. Also, while on Las Olas, try . We like the Rustic Inn (almost a total dump) www.rusticinn.com coupons)(next to FLL), and at the end of Commercial Blvd, in Laud by the Sea, Arubas Cafe. Just a bit N into Pompano area is the Sea Watch.....Good Seafood.

My second favorite Pizza is not Anthonys...it is Angelos on Garfield at the B%26#39;Walk in Hollywood. Bring you paddle, because the Brooklyn Boys will ask you to join their game. AJ (Bensonhurst-%26amp; owner of Angelos) is always beat up because it%26#39;s the othr guys paddle that did it..Most B%26#39;Walk 16 inch large tomatoe pie %26amp; pitcher of beer or soda is $13.99....and ice cream cones just went up to $1.25 from $1.00. This 1920s B%26#39;Walk is missing Nathans, but it doesn%26#39;t need it. Only a New Yorker could understand it.....

Favorite Itialian food %26amp; tomato pie is Conca D%26#39;Oro on Youngs Circle, Hollywood. (US Rt One at the circle near Hollywood Blvd). The tomato pie at Lorenzos Italian Market is N. Miami Beach (N 163 st) is excellent, and a new place just opened on Gulfstream Park thats supposed to be excellent....(too expensive for me...Lulu has the $$$. (LOL)

Sure Lulu %26amp; Others will chime in, too. There are lots of good places, in nearly everyones price range. Remember, those that search for the Morton Steak in the Golden Corral are usually disappointed.

    Local restaurants

Left off: While on Las Olas, try Storks Cafe.....excellent baked goods.

Storks is great, lovely cakes, nice to sit outside if you can.

Oasis on the beach is good for casual dining, great view.

Thai on the Beach is cosy and intimate and good food.

There is a wonderful Indian restaurant just further north past the Best Western Pelican resort called the Nabab, we went twice in a week, excellent.

I liked the Floridian diner on Las Olas that stays open 24hrs too.

Thank You for all the suggestions! Not interested in the big chains but will definetly check out others. Just hope the sun is shining.

We will have a car. We are heading to the Eden Roc in Miami Beach after we leave Fort Lauderdale. Using my reward points whenever I can.

Your hotel , the Atlantic , has restuarant called Trina which is a current ';hot spot'; but very expensive. It might be a nice spot for drinks and a light meal.

We%26#39;re having a bit of cold snap now, but the forcast is for high 70%26#39;s and low 80%26#39;s over the weekend - at least at this point.

Be sure to go to Las Olas Blvd. - lots of great restaurants. My favorites are Le Bonne Crepe, Cafe Europa, Rino%26#39;s Tuscan and Johny V%26#39;s, but there are many others- and the Floridian, on the east end away from most action is a great breakfast place- was on the Food Network. O, and a big slab of fudge from Kilwins for dessert!!

One of my fav restaurants is Canyon on Sunrise Blvd, next to Gateway Theater. For more casual a good meal is any of the Flannigans..the ribs are fall off the bone good. Great seafood at Sunfish Grill off Atlantic Blvd. Daryll and Olivers Caffe Max, again off Atlantic Blvd is awesome. Incredible Sunday brunch at Blue Moon off Commerical Blvd, I would say best bang for buck too. Not the typical buffet style, you order some items off menu but can order as much as you want.

Thank You to all for input! We have had wind chills of 8 degrees and below,so 70%26#39;s sound delightful.

    Character breakfast-boy (8) and girl (5)

Where do you recommend to take children of these ages for a character breakfast? We have purchased the dining package and will probably opt OUT of doing Cinderella%26#39;s castle, but wondered which establishment would best suit our 2 children? Any help?

    Character breakfast-boy (8) and girl (5)

Hi Hammers, try a character breakfast at Restaurantosaurus in Animal Kingdom. They do an all you can eat buffet. We managed to get in one day while we were walking past without having booked first. Depends if you are going at a busy time of year but probably best to book in advance.

    Character breakfast-boy (8) and girl (5)

I agree. We went to Restaurantosaurus in Animal Kingdom with our 10 year old and had a good time. Food was very good, plenty of choice.

Saw the main characters - Mickey, Donald Duck, Goofy etc who all take time to come to each table to hug each child, sign autographs and pose for a photo.

I haven;t tried it myself but you could also check out the Crystal Palace at Magic Kingdom - I think the characters there are Winnie the Pooh and friends.

Wherever you decide its definitely worth booking ahead to be certain of getting in.

I was curious about the Character dining as well. My older son(8) does not care for characaters but my younger son(4)loves them. I want one of these experiences for my younger son but the older one would probably not care too much much about it. What would be the best one for us. We too are doing the dining plan so I think some are considered one meal and some take two of your meals for one character dining.

    Hello Hammers House,

Of all the character meal choices the Restaurantosaurus at the Animal Kingdom is my least favorite.

I would recommend Chef Mickey%26#39;s at the Contemporary with Mickey and Minnie

The Crystal Palace with Pooh, Eeyore, Tigger and Piglet or Cape May Cafe at the Yacht and Beach Club with Goofy, Minnie, Chip and Dale.

For a wonderful dinnner character meal the Liberty Tree Tavern at the Magic Kingdom is great!

The only character meal at this time that takes 2 table on the dining plan is Cinderellas Royal Table.

Meant to include that the Crystal Palace is located at the Magic Kingdom.

We have done a couple of character meals and found the best to be chef mickeys.

When we did that it was our sons birthday and it was just fantastic.

    Good luck.

    Janice

We have only tried this one and the Garden Grill at Epcot for character dining. The Garden Grill was good, it was my son%26#39;s birthday when we went and he had a personal phone call from Goofy wishing him happy birthday and they gave him a special cake.

Healin, what didn%26#39;t you like about Restaurantosaurus?

I%26#39;ve heard Chef Mickey%26#39;s mentioned a few times, may try it next time. Assume you don%26#39;t have to be staying there?

We have done the charchater meal at Chef Mickeys in the Contempory, it was great and the food was good. They also do a Lilo and Stitch meal now in the Polynesian hotel, should have been there at Christmas but had to cancel our holiday due to complications from surgery, we were so disappointed!!

I%26#39;ve enjoyed all of the breakfasts listed here. Part of the choice is where you%26#39;re going to be for the day or at least for the morning.

I enjoyed Restaurantasaurus on my last visit. They do a lot of ';gags'; for the kids which the others don%26#39;t do, such as squirting fake ketchup and mustard.

I like Chef Mickeys more for breakfast than dinner.

We did Chef Mickeys (at the Contemporary Resort - Mickey, Donald, Minnie, Chip, Dale, Goofy) and we also did Crystal Palace (in Magic Kingdom - Pooh, Eeyore, Tigger, Piglet) last summer - both were great fun and I%26#39;d highly recommend them.

This year as well as repeating those 2 we%26#39;re gonna try the Ohana Character Breakfast at the Polynesian Resort with Lilo and Stitch and Pluto and Mickey. I%26#39;ve heard that it%26#39;s very funny with Stitch stealing people%26#39;s food and making a mess with drinks etc. etc.

Looking for the best town on the Gulf

Help me out locals- my girlfriend and I (early 30%26#39;s) are considering an extended vacation or possibly even moving to the Gulf Coast area. Don%26#39;t know much about it but we heard Ft myers, St. Pete, Siesta Key and Destin are all nice. We live in Seattle now... enough said? Where should we look? Any young, vibrant beach towns/ neighborhoods, with upscale shopping, intelligent and diverse residents, culture, etc? We like the benefits of our city life, but a good margarita on a sunny beach would be fantastic! Please help... we need to dry out!

Looking for the best town on the Gulf

we live in sarasota, and have been here for 15 yrs (we moved when we were in our mid thirties). We are professionals, and have our social community. first off, no, there are no young towns in florida. i say that tongue in cheek, but also not. when we go anywhere else, we are always struck by the number of young people...elsewhere. that being said, i think sarasota is growing, and growing with younger people. it is a fairly ';hip';, intelligent place, definitley with upscale shopping, and beautiful beaches (siesta key, and other keys), and some culture. i am from new york, and a bit spoiled as far as culture goes, but we do have an opera house, several local theatres (again, not like NY), a concert hall, with real performers, etc. we like our slower, warmer, gentler lifestyle, but we also miss ';the real world';. it is also more politically conservative here than in the northeast. hope this helps--ask more questions if you have them.....

Looking for the best town on the Gulf

Lemstar gave a nice summary of some of the features offered in Sarasota. Sounds as if that area might be a prime option for the lifestyle you are seeking.

Thanks for the info Lemstar- We are somewhat afraid of the Florida I remember from childhood- Going from NY to see the grandparents in their little gated community with nothing to do other than walk to a pastel colored strip mall. We are afraid of dollar stores, far right wing Republicans (sorry if that offends), non-gay friendly people, etc. We like to be able to walk to our local Starbucks, wine bar (or margarita bar depending on the mood!), art gallery etc. We can afford maybe a %26lt;400K house. Any particular niighborhood (close to the beach I hope) that might fit the bill? Anywhere that you think might be up and coming for these things? Thanks again.

I would say that if money isn%26#39;t an option, you may want to live in Seaside. That%26#39;s really the best, although it is a little further North than the Sota areas.

If you can%26#39;t think of what Seaside looks like, go rent the movie ';The Truman Show';. That%26#39;s Seaside. It%26#39;s a really small, quaint town. But ex-pen-sive. Like tourists who don%26#39;t know what a WalMart is go there (a children%26#39;s Teeshirt....$40)

My roommate in Pensacola used to work there for the summer months and she liked to talk about the ';Seaside Bubble'; or ';Truman Bubble'; because it%26#39;s like sunny all the time there, even if a storm is raging across the panhandle. Although they%26#39;re not supposed to do it, many summer visitors will walk the streets and shop with their glass of wine or such.

There%26#39;s a couple of great restaurants and bars, and a great bookstore (real eclectic).

Seaside would be between Destin and Panama City. Destin has gorgeous beaches, dolphins swimming around the shore and blah blah blah.

Downside? It gets colder there than here (in Sarasota). And there is a riptide some days, although it is worse near Pensacola and Ft. Walton than Seaside.

Sarasota and Ft Meyers around here is BOOMING. house prices are still increasing faster than I can shake a stick at. Age is still older though. This place is perfect for the snobirds. I lived in Tampa and that has a younger feel (probably because it is more of a city). Lot%26#39;s of young hip things to do there.

Ft. Meyers is sprouting new houses and movie theaters every day, but there is a lot of driving you%26#39;ll still have to do to get to other places. Older crowd.

I%26#39;m new here but most everything seems to be pretty much here in Sarasota so you wouldn%26#39;t have to drive as much as Ft. Meyers. It has a small town feel, but there is a bit of a sprawl.

Siesta Key has a similar quaint feel as Seaside, just a lot more traffic nearby. The beaches are really the same white sugary beaches (Siesta vs Seaside) except that Siesta seems to have more shell pieces. There is a vibrant artsy feel around here, I%26#39;ll say that.

Seaside you would have to drive to either Destin or Panama City for like big nights out. There is nothing around Seaside...well a lot of pine forests that are making way for condos, but you know what I%26#39;m saying. And Sarasota has a much more mixing of cultures than Seaside (major downside to Seaside actually). Probably why all of the festivities and vibrant art around here are better.

Fla is really conservative most areas. Much to the constant amazement of the rest of the country for some reason. So much so that many counties allow Democrats to vote in the Republican primaries when there%26#39;s no opposition. I have a friend up in Seattle going to school and she and her husband can%26#39;t wait to get back to conservative Florida.

Remember, it is really hot in Florida. Things will die/spoil in your car if left there for like 5 minutes in the summer. I%26#39;m exaggerating, but not by much.

Tampa seems younger than here, but no beaches. Tampa is about an hour drive from Sarasota.

St. Pete is older, but trying to revitalize their downtown to the younger crowd.

    Some observations.

    morph--

be afraid, very afraid. it is the florida you remember (right wing, pastel, early bird dinners), BUT we live here and like it anyway. i would be lying to say i didnt miss the ';real world';. i do. but i choose to remain here, and cultivated my group of friends. as far as gay friendly, there are lots of gay people here, as it is an artsy community, which also makes it somewhat cool. as far as which neighborhood, what a loaded question. no kids? or no plans for kids? do you want a condo? a house? a yard? do you have pets? if you want to live right on the water, or even a few blocks away, i dont think $400,000 would get you much. but you could get a house for that much a mile or two or three away, or maybe four. beware: there are lots of gated pastel communities with deed restrictions. we live east of the interstate now, with over an acre, no gate although the neighborhood people are talking about one (i dont want it), some deed restricitons although not overwhelming ones. all of your fears will be realized, i am afraid to say, but so will your dreams too. you have to weigh it out, but to be honest, your fears are real. then again, we are very left, from new york, and enjoy the climate, slower pace, cheaper cost of living, etc. ask more questions if you like....

oh, and i dont think seaside fits your bill. and we do have several starbucks here, although not on every block. tampa/st pete are options for you as well, with more of the city feel, but sarasota has many of the benefits of a city (cultural, etc), but also has a small town feel.

    ask more.....

Wow, Lemstar you are being extremely helpful. Strongbad, thanks for the advice as well.

I guess the description of my needs was rather vague Lemstar and I was afraid you might confirm my fears as well. No kids, no plans for any, love dogs, artsy towns, the beach. A house with a pool and yard by the beach would be ideal but probably not affordable. Gay brother in the family who we would want to feel comfortable coming to visit. We are certainly not big partiers anymore, but we do apprciate being socially and physically active. Whether it%26#39;s meeting friends for a wine tasting or meeting the guys for our Sunday softball game, we appreciate having the options. I guess it%26#39;s all a trade off. We love the city of Seattle, but the weather is atrocious for 9 months of the year, the traffic is awful, and we are priced out of our housing market. As much as Florida seems like a possible remedy for things, we are really concerned about how vastly out of our element both culturally and socially we would feel there.

    Better idea now?

dont get me wrong. i think sarasota might fit your bill. as far as the gay thing, that would be fine here. i have more gay friends here than i did in NY. why not come here for an extended visit? i definitely think you would want to rent before buying anyway, as there are many different areas in sarasota, with different personalities. no, you would not be buying a house by the beach with a yard in sarasota for $400,000. maybe in a different area, but i think you want the cultural/artsy faction sarasota offers. there is plenty to do, especially in the great outdoors. the air is clean, the weather is great (it gets cold, ie in the 40s in the winter), lots of cool wildlife. people have smaller yards here as the landscaping/mowing is yearround, the grass isnt soft-roll-around-on-it grass. people focus more on their lanais and pools than their yards. but like i said, we have over an acre, fenced in, with 2 dogs, 2 cats, and a bearded dragon.

have you ever been to sarasota? come visit. check it out.

so, again, ask more questions if you have them.

Lemstar: What do you know about St. Petersburg? Is the real estate there more reasonable? Do you know who buys those old bungalows? Culturally, is there much going on there or do people rely more on Tampa? Thanks.

i dont know about st. pete. i do know some friends just bought a small cute house in a neighborhood that they feel will afford them the benefits of being able to walk ';into the city';, or walk a block to get to stores. but i do not really know anything about st. pete. sorry.

Getting to Haulover from Ft. Lauderdale

About how long is the drive? Should we just head down A1A? Mapquest says to use 95.

We%26#39;re staying at the Marriott BeachPlace Towers on a timeshare exchange and just want to check it out. Neither of us intends to go nude but we%26#39;re a physically fit young couple and we have some swimwear that we might not feel comfortable wearing in the more family oriented Fort Lauderdale area.

Oh yeah, and how%26#39;s the weather in early May?

Getting to Haulover from Ft. Lauderdale

I think you%26#39;ll find I95 much quicker as A1A is full of lights and lots of traffic. You can try it and see but if it were me, I%26#39;d do 95. It%26#39;s about 21 miles to the North Parking lot of Haulover Beach and should take around 30 minutes.

Haulover Beach is the sandy beach part of Haulover Park which includes a small golf course, marina, picnic area, boat ramp. The clothing optional beach is the most northern 1/3 or so of the beach. Most of the beach is a ';textile'; beach.

As you enter Haulover Park from the north, you%26#39;ll want to park on the first parking lot on your right (North Parking Lot - $5 parking fee). There is a wooden walkway that leads to a tunnel that goes under Collins Avenue so it%26#39;s a safe walk to the beach. Once you enter the beach area, you find most straight couples are on your right (south) and to your left (north) is mostly populated by gay couples.

It%26#39;s a great beach with very friendly folks. You%26#39;ll find that almost all of the guys are sans clothes, some of the ladies wear bottoms but almost all are top free.

It%26#39;s a great beach that we visit pretty much every time we visit South Beach at least once during each trip!

May is a GREAT time to be down there as the weather is warm, lots of sun (longer days), water warm enough to swim, and the rainy season isn%26#39;t in full effect.

In fact, we%26#39;ll be there in early May as well so maybe we%26#39;ll see you there!

    Cheers!

Getting to Haulover from Ft. Lauderdale

    Rodeway inn International

Can anyone confirm that the Rodeway Inn 6327 International Drive is the International or carrier. Previous posts have me worried.

Also can anyone confirm which of the 2 buildings is best to be in. I am travelling

    25th March for 2 weeks with 11 %26amp; 13 year girls

    Rodeway inn International

It%26#39;s the Rodeway Inn International. You don%26#39;t want to stay at the Rodeway Inn Carrier, which is worse than the dickens. I believe that the Rodeway Inn Carrier used to be a Days Inn. You%26#39;ll be fine at the Rodeway Inn International. It is nothing fancy, but is a good value. The majority of the hotels in this section of Orlando are older hotels that get terrible reviews. This one is an exception, and I wouldn%26#39;t worry too much about this hotel. It is actually decent compared to some other hotels along this part of I-Drive. Just don%26#39;t expect the Hilton and you%26#39;ll be fine.

    Rodeway inn International

    larma,

Please do not judge the USA by your stay at either one of these hotels! We can do much better than this! Is this your first trip to WDW??

    Hi

Ive stayed at a few hotels on International Drive and we always go for midrange hotels. Out of the three I have stayed in, the Rodeway International was the best. I have found hotels on International Drive are more basic/budget but the Rodeway was clean. We were on the ground floor. This time however we have decided to spend a bit more and stay at The Fountains as you get a kitchen as well and it does seem a bit more luxurious.

I went back in 91 before kids. However I am a single parent and that is all I could realy stretch to. It%26#39;s costing 1700 GBP for flights %26amp; hotel. Then I%26#39;ve the tickets to the attractions on top. Does anyone know which is the better building to stay in

DONT stay at rodeway carrier !!!! its a dump we were booked there in error got out quicker than we booked in!!!! we have stayed at rodeway international several times and highly reccomend it

  • Sanibel With Kids

We are renting a few condos (multiple families) at Signal Inn (any feedback would be appreciated) during early April. There will be ten kids ranging in ages from 17 down to 5. Any restaurants you would recommend? Any activities you would recommend with kids? We are just planning on a low key trip...lots of sun and swimming. This will be our first visit to Sanibel. Thanks!

    Sanibel With Kids

Just remember that there is a toll to go across to Sanibel from Ft. Myers, so plan your shopping trips carefully.

    Sanibel With Kids

My first suggestion would be to look back through previous discussions for an abundance of comments on what is available on Sanibel.

Just a few ideas for restaurants: Cheeburger, Cheeburger and Island Cow, Lighthouse Cafe for a hearty breakfast. Some highly recommend the Bubble Room, but we thought that to be an ';okay'; experience, not a ';must do';.

You will want to rent bicycles because that is how most of us get around the island rather than relying primarily on a car. There are over 20 miles of easy pedaling bike paths on Sanibel. The older kids might enjoy kayaking, canoeing at Tarpon Bay where you can opt for a guided tour with a naturalist. If you encounter a rainy day, take the younger ones to the library for a change of scene and possible scheduled activity (not likely to happen, but you never know!) Visit the fishing pier and watch the pelicans as they wait for an opportunity to snag themselves an easy meal. Since this is your first visit, do factor in a trip to the Ding Darling Refuge and let the youngsters appreciate this bit of ';natural'; florida and the wildlife. Most youngsters will find themselves caught up in beach walks to find that ';special shell';.

For the most part, the kids will keep themselves busy with the beach, sandcastling, pool time, tennis if they play. Seems we always have a game of cards, cribbage, or backgammon going...just relaxing and spending time together. If you have any avid fishermen in the group, they may enjoy a 1/2 day charter trip out of the Marina. Appetites soar and it seems the kids are always popping in for a snack or a quick meal so stock up well.

I wouldn%26#39;t worry too much about what ';to do'; on Sanibel. Part of the appeal is that the island offers a change of pace and unstructured time for families to just rediscover the joys of being together.

Many kids can spend hours happily looking for shells on the beach. The Baily-Matthews Shell Museum is very worth a visit and has a touch tank for the kids. Miss Paradise has a nautralist lead afternoon trip that helps you under the sealife in the bay. Most of the fishing guides can only manage 4 people, but a half day fishing may suit some.

As you enter the island the second building on the right is the Chamber of Commerce Visitors Center. Do stop and get all kinds of info about what%26#39;s happening that week on the islands. Drive up to Captiva and visit some of the restaurants (I happen to agree the Bubble Room has become more hype than good, but it is an experience) there. Also checkout Captiva Cruises for trips to the out islands or a sunset cruise.

    Enjoy!!!!

I have visited Sanibel many times with my kids. Finding them things to do will not be a problem. I think you will find that they will be happy to spend lots of time on the beach and at the pool. Bring lots of shovels to build giant sand castles/structures. Make sure to pick up a tide table (the chamber of commerce, on your right when you first get onto the island, has them)so you can find out when low tide is each day. Your kids will have a great time shelling and looking at the cool critters on the beach during low tide. Depending on the weather, kite flying or boogie boarding may be possibilites, too. I second the recommendation for Cheeburger Cheeburger, but I say skip the Bubble Room. Very overpriced. Instead, try the Lazy Flamingo. There are two, but I like the one near Blind Pass the best. I love the Tarpon Bay kayak trips, and it is possible to get a boat and captain at on the the marinas to take you to one of the less acessible islands for shelling/picnicking, too.

A beautiful tour that is also educational is the tour of the Edison (Thomas) home and labs. The grounds are marvelous!!! It is located on McGregor Blvd. almost in downtown Ft. Myers. Henry Ford%26#39;s home is next door, and also on the tour. The tour is almost 2 hours long, and well worth the time spent. There is also a museum on the property which is included in the tour.

I agree with the other posts...the kids will be plenty occupied with looking for shells. If you make it to Captiva, check out the Mucky Duck restaurant. My kids enjoyed sitting outside listening to the music and looking for shells on the beach in front of the restaurant. Bubble Room is a must for desserts, but skip the pricey lunch/dinner. Lazy Flamingo has wonderful food - we frequent the one at Blind Pass. I%26#39;ve heard that the Island Cow is great too, but haven%26#39;t tried it yet.

For more information, visit the Sanibel/Captiva Chamber of Commerce web site at www.sanibel-captiva.org.

    Hilton Grande Vacation Club

Anyone ever stayed here? It is the one in Orlando close to SeaWorld. My wife and I are considering staying here for a long weekend in April and are just wondering what we can expect out of this place. Thank you.

If you haven%26#39;t, check the user reviews for the resort by plugging in the full resort name in the upper left hand corner search box. Also, make sure not to mix it up with Hilton Grand Vacation Club on International Drive, which is their newer Orlando resort. And if you don%26#39;t get many responses here, post this question on the Orlando forum as well.

Pleasure Island is a night time entertainment complex, with restaurants, shops, and clubs. The restaurants and shops have no admission cost. For the clubs, you can either purchase a one club admission, which allows access to one club for the entire evening, or a multi club pass, which lets you ';club hop'; for the entire evening. If you purchase the Water Parks Fun and More option on your Disney ticket, you can use one of the options for Pleasure Island, and it works like buying a multi club pass. The Comedy Warehouse and Adventurer%26#39;s Club do not sell single club admissions. You have to use a multi club pass or a WPF%26amp;M option to access those clubs. The clubs are typically open from 7:00pm to 1:00am, but the shops and restaurants open earlier in the day.

We were just there Sunday night, SublimeBlue. I had read about PI online but wasn%26#39;t sure what to expect. We had a great time - there%26#39;s certainly nothing like that here at Disneyland in California! We went into InMotion and the Rock N Roll Beach Club. The latter was our favorite. Enjoy!
